Each year the University of Otago runs a summer studentship programme which offers students an opportunity to get ten weeks of real world hands-on research.
This year BAIL sponsored and co-supervised a summer student to evaluate the patients admitted to the transitionz programme at Burwood hospital, and we welcomed Zahra Shahtahmasebi to the BAIL team over the summer.

News: NZ Rick Hansen SCI Registry
The aim of the National Spinal Cord Impairment Strategy1 is to deliver the best health, wellbeing and life expectancy outcomes for people with spinal cord impairment (SCI) and provide standardised services across New Zealand (Accident Compensation Corporation and the Ministry of Health). One objective of the strategy was to establish a NZ registry for SCI to provide nationally relevant and internationally comparable data to inform health care delivery improvements and research objectives.

Professor Associate Professor Deborah Payne, Anna Nelson, Dr Huhana Hickey and Professor Clare Hocking are facilitating a 2-day think tank in Auckland in April 2016 which will bring together disability activists and researchers to help identify priority areas that require exploration and chart a path towards addressing them. The specific aims of the think tank are:
• Identify and prioritise health issues for disabled people/people living with disability in Aotearoa New Zealand.

February was a busy month for BAIL. There was a good turnout for Nicola Kayes Associate Professor, AUT University, who presented at the inaugural ‘BAIL Presents’ speaking about the therapeutic relationship in rehabilitation. We also had the first BAIL peer group meeting of the year which focused on Participatory Action Research (PAR) with presentations by Ally Calder Clinical Educator at the School of Physiotherapy, University of Otago and Rebecca Washbourn Senior Physiotherapist, On the Go Physio Ltd

Happy Birthday to us! Yes we have reached the incredible milestone of 10 years. After our first decade we can say the Burwood Academy of Independent Living is strong, vibrant, still growing and making a real difference in disability, rehabilitation and independent living research.
The last 10 years have seen many milestones and we celebrated it like we do with most things at BAIL, with cake.

BAIL and Burwood Hospital were very well represented at the recent Australasian Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine (AFRM) and New Zealand Rehabilitation Association (NZRA) combined conference in Wellington in October. The conference theme was building an enabling society and there were wide ranging presentations considering the many factors that contribute to making a society enabling or disabling.
