Happy New Year from the team at BAIL

As the Burwood Campus continues to evolve and develop around us we are reminded that good things take time. As at the time of writing the BAIL office is still temporarily located in the Marshland Room next to Travis Café after the Allan Bean Centre was closed mid-2014. The space is working out well for us and we are enjoying working in closer quarters with our NZ Spinal Trust colleagues.

Where did 2014 go to? It never fails to amaze us how life seems to gain pace in the last quarter of every year especially here at the Burwood Hospital Campus.

This year we have again seen a consistently good turn out to our regular BAIL Research Peer Group meetings held on campus. These meetings provide new and more seasoned researchers opportunities to present in a supportive environment, whether the goal is to tease out a new study protocol, practise for an up and coming conference or to disseminate research findings.

We are now well settled into The Marshland Room and have a sense of being back to business as usual again. It has been a busy time for some of our team attending important events across the globe and we are keen to tell you about them in this months’ BAIL’s Tales.

What a month we have had at BAIL. With our NZ Spinal Trust colleagues and some volunteers from Dynamic Controls, eight of us packed up and emptied out our beloved Allan Bean Centre in 15 hours.

It has been quite a month since you last read about us.
Donald Rumsfeld famously said “…there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns” The BAIL team this last month have faced a lot unknowns and much uncertainty and it was a case of holding our breath there for a bit. Gladly we can tell you that all is now known.

Wheelchair users readiness for emergencies and opinions of a proposed Disabled Persons Emergency Response Register.

Overview

The aim of this research is to find out how ready for emergencies wheelchair users are and what they think about the concept of a Disabled Persons Emergency Response Register which could be used for planning and response to emergencies.

Method

A nationwide survey of manual wheelchair users recruited from Disability Organisations and via health professionals.

Are you ready to roll if a disaster strikes?

In the last 12 months people in New Zealand have been affected by earthquakes in Marlborough and Wellington, severe wind storms in Canterbury, West Coast and central New Zealand as well as flooding in Auckland, Northland, Wellington and Christchurch. And who can forget the Canterbury earthquakes of 2010/2011?
