BAILS TALES - FEBRUARY - "BAIL INTERNATIONAL"

We concluded 2012 telling you we were in for a great 2013 with lots of exciting happenings that we would inform you of. One of these is the pending visit to Christchurch of our international advisor and long term friend Professor Gerben DeJong, PhD, FACRM. Professor DeJong is a Senior Fellow and Director of the Center for Post-acute Innovation and Research at the MedStar National Rehabilitation Hospital (NRH) and the MedStar Health Research Institute in Washington, DC. He also serves as a Professor in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at Georgetown University School of Medicine. Earlier in his career he was instrumental in bringing an academic perspective to the independent living and disability rights movements both of which continue to inform his perspective on disability and rehabilitation issues. He is the author or co-author of 250 papers on health policy, health care financing, post-acute rehabilitation, and health outcomes. He is the recipient of many awards and is a frequently invited speaker both in the United States and abroad. In 1984 he was a Fulbright Scholar in the Netherlands. Professor De Jong is being hosted by the University of Otago and comes to New Zealand and to BAIL as the visiting William Evans Fellow and will be with us during March and April. He will be delivering a number of presentations focussing on a range of topics relevant to making rehabilitation sustainable in today’s fiscally driven healthcare climate.
