BAIL'S TALES : July

Kia Ora from the team at BAIL

Are our BAIL researchers trying to take on the world?
They are certainly having a global impact and maintaining and growing our international reputation.

Dr Deborah Snell has had an abstract accepted for an oral presentation at the American Congress in Rehabilitation Medicine (ACRM) 91st Annual Conference in Toronto in October. Her presentation will be focused on the contribution of psychological factors to recovery after a mild traumatic brain injury and is a collaborative effort involving researchers from the CDHB, University of Otago and AUT. She is being sponsored by BAIL and the CDHB to attend.

Anne Sinnott is off to Europe in September for two important events. She is attending the ISCOS conference in Maastricht, The Netherlands with an abstract entitled “The Implementation of the NZ Based International Upper Limb Surgery Registry”. Also the English version of a Swedish book translated with Anne’s help entitled ”The Art of Healthy Living with Physical Impairments” will be launched at the conference and following that, in Stockholm, Sweden. Anne will attend the book launch as a guest of Spinalis along with the editor Di Geda formerly from Christchurch, now based in Italy.

In November Anne will join Johnny Bourke and Jo Nunnerley who have all been invited to speak at ANZSCOS 2014 in Auckland. Johnny and Jo are presenting aspects of their PhD’s and Johnny and Anne are leading a panel discussion on “The Contribution of the Lived Experience of SCI to Science”

In May 2014, Rachelle Martin travelled to Fremantle to present a paper at the Australasian Society for the Study of Brain Impairment (ASSBI) conference. Her paper was titled “Life goals and social identity in people with severe acquired brain injury.” The presentation summarised the results of her recently completed Master’s thesis in which the participant’s narratives supported a growing body of literature highlighting the need to focus on the social identity of the person with an acquired brain injury.
As evidenced above, the work of the BAIL team is certainly not restricted to the Burwood Campus and we wish our colleagues all the very best as they fly the BAIL flag around the country and around the world.
